Hostas, the shade garden's backbone.
The go-to foliage perennial for shade - from the giant Empress Wu to blue Halcyon and gold-edged Frances Williams. Grown for leaf shape, size and colour rather than the lavender flower spikes. Sorted by difficulty, with light, size and the slug battle everyone fights. There are 16 in the catalog.
Keep away from pets. Toxic to cats and dogs. Hostas contain saponins; a pet that eats them may vomit, have diarrhoea and act depressed. Keep them away from animals that graze the border.
