Origin & Natural Habitat
Rivers, lakes and springs across warm regions worldwide; several species and forms are in the hobby.
Appearance
Grass-like green ribbons from a few centimetres wide, growing tall enough to trail along the surface; spreads into dense stands.

Care
Light: Moderate; adaptable, but brighter light keeps stands dense.
Water: 18-28°C, pH 6.5-8.0, tolerant of harder, more alkaline water than most.
Substrate: Plain sand or gravel is fine; root tabs boost it. Plant the crown at soil level, not buried.
CO₂ & feeding: Not needed; grows fast regardless.
Placement: Background - it will trail across the surface and spread sideways.
Extra: ⚠️ Do not bury the white crown where leaves meet roots, or the plant rots. Spread the roots below and keep the crown just at the surface of the substrate.
Propagation
Constant runners - baby plants appear on side shoots; snip the runner once each is rooted.
Common Problems & Pests
Melting after planting (transition); dislikes liquid-carbon products (Excel), which can melt it. Trim, do not cut, tall leaves - cut tips brown.
Toxicity & Safety
Non-toxic to livestock; not known to be toxic to cats or dogs.

FAQ
My val melted right after planting - normal?
Yes, transition melt is common. Keep the roots in and it regrows. Note that liquid-carbon (glutaraldehyde) products often melt Vallisneria - avoid them with this plant.
Why won't it spread?
Give it a little more light and root nutrition, and leave the runners attached until the babies root.
