Water Sprite

Overview

Water sprite is a true aquatic fern that gives you a choice: plant it for a lacy green bush, or float it for an instant surface jungle with dangling roots. It grows fast, feeds hungrily from the water, and produces baby plantlets right on its old leaves. The flip side of that speed is regular thinning and a dramatic melt if you bury the crown. (Ceratopteris thalictroides; the broader-leaved Ceratopteris cornuta is often sold under the same name.)

Origin & Natural Habitat

Pantropical - quiet ponds, ditches, rice paddies and swamp edges across tropical Asia, Africa and the Americas, growing rooted in mud or floating free. As with all fast aquatics, never release aquarium plants into waterways.

Appearance

Light green, finely divided fern fronds - lacy and carrot-top-like when grown submerged, broader when floating or emersed. A planted specimen forms a loose rosette up to 30 cm or more; floated, it spreads sideways and trails feathery roots into the water.

Care

Light: Moderate. Floating plants sit close to the light and grow fastest; planted ones need reasonably bright light to stay dense.

Water: 22-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Gentle flow - strong current tatters the fronds and shoves floating plants into the filter.

Substrate: If planting, anchor the roots in fine substrate but keep the crown (the growing centre) above it. A buried crown rots, and the whole plant dissolves.

CO₂ & feeding: Not required. It is a water-column feeder, so a liquid fertiliser keeps growth green and steady in clean tanks.

Placement: Midground/background bush when planted, or free-floating surface cover for breeding and shrimp tanks.

Extra: Thin it ruthlessly. Left alone, a floating layer of water sprite can seal the surface, dim the whole tank and crash the plants below it.

Propagation

Effortless - old fronds grow plantlets along their edges. Let a detached frond float and each plantlet develops roots; separate and replant or float them.

Common Problems & Pests

Melt after buying (old fronds dissolve, new adapted ones follow); crown rot from deep planting; fronds shredded by strong flow or hungry goldfish; surface mats blocking light. Pests are essentially a non-issue.

Toxicity & Safety

Not known to be toxic to cats, dogs or aquarium livestock. Shrimp-safe.

FAQ

Planted or floating - which is better?

Floating is easier and faster: the plant sits near the light and feeds straight from the water. Planting looks more deliberate but demands more light and an unburied crown. Many keepers float the spare plantlets as a backup either way.

My water sprite is dissolving - is it dead?

Probably not. It commonly melts when moved to new water, and always if the crown is buried. Lift it so the crown is clear, keep the light on schedule, and look for fresh lacy growth from the centre within a week or two.
