Identification & Appearance
The cap is 6-15 cm across, starting as a rounded drumstick and expanding to a flattish disc, pale buff to greyish, and breaking up into large coarse upturned brown scales that give it a shaggy, tousled look. Gills are white, crowded, and free of the stem, bruising reddish then browning with age. The stem is smooth, whitish to pale brown, without the snakeskin banding of the true parasol, bulbous at the base, and carries a thick movable double-edged ring. The critical feature is the flesh: cut the stem or cap and it flushes bright saffron to orange-red within a minute or two, then darkens to brownish. Spore print is white, which is the single most important check, because the dangerous green-spored parasol has a distinctly green spore print.
