Five mix recipes by plant family - aroids, succulents, ferns, seed starting and an all-purpose upgrade - with exact ratios, what each ingredient does, and the two mistakes that ruin homemade mixes.

Potting Mix Recipes That Work

The short version: almost every good potting mix is the same three jobs in different ratios - something that holds water, something that holds air, and something that holds the plant up. Once you see bagged mixes that way, recipes stop being magic. An aroid mix is mostly air with some water storage; a succulent mix is mostly drainage with a little water storage; a seed mix is fine, moist and empty of nutrition. Below are the five mixes that cover practically every houseplant, with ratios by volume - a yoghurt pot, a trowel scoop, anything consistent works as the unit.

If you only take one thing: the enemy of roots in pots is not dryness, it is airlessness. Roots breathe. Every recipe here exists to keep air in the root zone longer than a bag of dense, peat-heavy “universal” soil would.

The ingredients and what each one actually does

  • Coco coir or peat - the water-holding base. Coir rewets more easily after drying out; if you use peat, know that it is hard to rewet once fully dry.
  • Perlite - the air. Those white foamed-rock granules create permanent air pockets and do not break down. Pumice does the same job, heavier and without floating to the surface.
  • Orchid bark - coarse structure. Creates large gaps roots grow around; slowly decomposes over a couple of years, which is one reason repotting exists at all.
  • Worm castings or fine compost - gentle nutrition and biology. A little goes a long way; too much makes a mix dense and soggy.
  • Coarse sand or grit - weight and drainage for succulents. Must be coarse - fine play sand does the opposite and cements a mix solid.
  • Sphagnum moss - a moisture buffer for moisture-loving aroids and terrarium work.

Recipe 1 - Aroid mix (monstera, philodendron, pothos, anthurium)

4 parts orchid bark · 3 parts coir · 2 parts perlite · 1 part worm castings. Optional: a handful of sphagnum for plants you struggle to keep evenly moist, a spoon of horticultural charcoal per pot.

This is the chunky, open mix aroids grow in as forest climbers, where their roots run through leaf litter rather than soil. Water should flash through it in seconds, and it should feel light and springy in the hand. If your finished mix looks too coarse to “hold” anything, it is probably right - aroids fail in dense mixes, almost never in open ones.

Recipe 2 - Succulent and cactus mix

3 parts coir · 3 parts perlite or pumice · 2 parts coarse sand or grit · 1 part bark. For desert cacti, push minerals further: equal parts organic and mineral is the floor, not the ceiling.

The goal is a mix that gets wet, then gets dry, fast - succulents rot from weeks of dampness, not from watering day itself. A finished succulent mix barely holds together when you squeeze a moist handful. Bagged “cactus mix” is often just regular mix with slightly more sand; upgrading it with a third of its volume in perlite is the single cheapest fix in this article. Recipe 3 - Ferns and moisture lovers (calathea, maranta, peace lily)

4 parts coir · 2 parts perlite · 1 part worm castings · 1 part fine bark. Optional: 1 part sphagnum for calathea-family plants that sulk between waterings.

This mix holds moisture longer while still keeping a quarter of its volume as air. It should feel like a wrung-out sponge a day after watering - damp, never swampy. If fungus gnats show up, you are keeping the top layer too wet for too long; let the surface dry and see the fungus gnat guide if they persist.

Recipe 4 - Seed starting and cuttings

3 parts coir · 1 part perlite, both sifted fine. No compost, no castings, no bark.

Seeds carry their own lunch, and seedling roots are fine enough that chunky structure just leaves them hanging in air gaps. The mix must be fine, uniformly moist and low in nutrients - rich mixes feed the fungi that cause damping-off faster than they feed a seedling. Recipe 5 - All-purpose upgrade

3 parts bagged houseplant mix · 1 part perlite · 1 part bark.

Not everything needs a bespoke blend. For tough general-purpose plants - dracaena, ZZ plant, snake plant, most palms - taking an ordinary bag and restoring the air that shipping compression squeezed out of it gets you 90 percent of the benefit for 10 percent of the shopping. If the bag smells sour when opened, it sat wet and anaerobic; let it air out for a day before using.

The two mistakes that ruin homemade mixes

Drainage layers. Gravel at the bottom of a pot does not improve drainage - water refuses to move from fine material into coarse until the fine layer is saturated, so a gravel layer simply raises the soggy zone closer to the roots. The whole pot gets the same mix, and the drainage hole does the draining.

Reusing tired mix. Old mix from a healthy plant can be refreshed - blended half-and-half with new ingredients and a scoop of castings - but bark that has broken down to crumbs has lost the structure that made the recipe work, and mix from any plant that died of rot or pests goes in the garden waste, not the next pot.

Mixes also age in place: bark decomposes, coir compresses, and after two to three years even a perfect recipe has slumped into something denser than you built. When water starts sitting on the surface or the pot stays heavy for a week, the mix is telling you it is done - that, more than the calendar, is the honest repotting signal. Ratios here are starting points, not law; nudge any recipe toward more perlite if your home runs cool and dim, toward more coir if it runs hot and dry, and let the watering calculator recalibrate your interval after any mix change.
