Overview
Java fern is the other unkillable aquarium epiphyte - textured strappy green fronds on a creeping rhizome that grip wood and rock, tolerate low light, and even hand you free baby plants along their own leaf edges. Like anubias, its rhizome must stay unburied. (Microsorum pteropus.)
Origin & Natural Habitat
Southeast Asia, on rocks and roots in and beside streams - often growing emersed at the water's edge as well as fully submerged.
Appearance
Long, slightly translucent green fronds with a distinctive branching vein pattern, from a wiry brown rhizome. 'Windelov' (lace tips) and 'Trident' are popular forms.
Why People Grow It - Qualities & Benefits
- Grows in low light, no CO2 needed
- Epiphyte - attaches to hardscape
- Makes free plantlets on its leaves
- Ignored by most plant-eating fish
Care
Light: Low to moderate; strong light bleaches and browns the fronds and feeds algae.
Water: 20-28ยฐC, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard; tolerates a wide range.
Substrate: None - attach the rhizome to wood or rock. Buried rhizomes rot.
COโ & feeding: Not required; grows slowly without it. Light dosing speeds it up a little.
Placement: Midground to background, on hardscape, out of the brightest light.
Extra: โ ๏ธ Black spots and bumps on the undersides of leaves are usually NOT disease - they are baby plants (plantlets). Let them grow a few leaves and roots, then detach and re-attach them.
Propagation
Detach the plantlets that form on leaf tips and edges, or split the rhizome. Both root readily.
Common Problems & Pests
'Java fern melt' - browning transparent patches, usually from too much light or a nutrient crash. Trim bad leaves; healthy rhizomes push new growth.
Toxicity & Safety
Non-toxic to aquarium livestock and not known to harm cats or dogs. A shrimp- and snail-safe classic.
Best Suited For
- Beginners and low-tech tanks
- Cichlid and goldfish tanks (attached, tough)
- Shaded midground planting
- Growing free plantlets
FAQ
My java fern leaves are turning brown and see-through - is it dying?
That is 'melt', usually from excess light or a nutrient swing. Trim the worst leaves and improve stability; the rhizome almost always regrows.
What are the black bumps under the leaves?
Baby plants forming. Leave them until they have small roots and leaves, then snap them off and tie them somewhere new.
