Java Moss

Overview

Java moss is a tangle of fine green strands that will attach to, or simply drape over, almost anything in a tank, grow in low light with no CO2, and give fish fry and shrimplets the cover they need to survive. It asks for nothing and spreads on its own. (Taxiphyllum barbieri.)

Origin & Natural Habitat

Southeast Asia, on wet rocks, roots and banks in and beside streams.

Appearance

Irregular, feathery green mats of branching strands; grows into cushions, carpets or 'trees' depending on how you attach it.

Care

Light: Low to moderate; low light keeps it tidy, bright light invites algae in the tangle.

Water: 18-30°C, pH 5.5-8.0 - one of the most tolerant plants in the hobby.

Substrate: None - tie or wedge it onto wood, rock or mesh; it anchors itself.

CO₂ & feeding: Not needed; grows either way. CO2 makes it denser and greener.

Placement: Anywhere - hardscape, walls, moss trees, carpets.

Extra: Its blessing is its curse: java moss traps detritus and grows everywhere, so it can look messy and clog filters. Trim it regularly and thin it out to keep it neat.

Propagation

Simply pull off a piece and attach it elsewhere; any fragment grows.

Common Problems & Pests

Traps mulm and looks scruffy if untrimmed; algae in bright light. Rinse and trim to refresh.

Toxicity & Safety

Non-toxic to livestock and a shrimp/fry favourite; not known to be toxic to cats or dogs.

FAQ

My java moss looks messy and full of gunk - what do I do?

It traps detritus. Take it out, swish it in tank water, trim it back and re-attach. Regular thinning keeps it tidy.

Does it need to be tied down forever?

Only until it grips. Once it attaches to wood, rock or mesh, you can remove the thread.
