๐ชฆ The barrel cactus that could not be saved
A worked example: this case follows the usual course of the problem and is not a diary of one particular plant.
How it arrived
A handsome golden barrel kept on the winter watering schedule of its tropical shelf-mates. It looked perfect right up until it did not: a soft, brown patch at the base one week, a visible lean the next.
The wrong first guess
The fatal one had already happened weeks earlier - regular winter water into cold soil around a plant built to sit dry. Everything after that was archaeology.
The actual diagnosis
Basal rot - the profile's 'classic killer' for this species. By the time a barrel cactus shows soft brown at the base, the rot has usually been eating the core from inside for weeks.
The rescue, step by step
- Unpotted immediately and cut upward from the base with a clean knife, hunting for solid, unstained flesh to save as a cutting.
- The rot ran through the centre well past halfway up - each higher cut showed the same brown-ringed core.
- The top slice looked clean, was dried for a week to callous, and was set on gritty mix as a last attempt.
- It softened from below within a fortnight. The rot had been there too, just not yet visible.
Timeline
Where it ended up
Lost. Not for lack of trying - for lateness. A barrel cactus hides rot inside a sealed, spiny body, and the visible symptom arrived long after the point of no return.
The lesson
Some rescues are decided before you notice anything is wrong. With desert cacti the save happens in autumn, when you stop watering - not in February, when the base goes soft. If a rescue page only showed victories, it would be lying about this.
