๐ฎโ๐จ The peace lily that played dead
A worked example: this case follows the usual course of the problem and is not a diary of one particular plant.
How it arrived
Every leaf flat over the pot rim, stems folded like cooked spinach. It had looked perfect two days earlier - the collapse was total and sudden enough that it was carried in wrapped in a bin bag, presumed dead.
The wrong first guess
Almost binned on arrival. A peace lily's full faint is so theatrical that people genuinely throw away plants that are one watering from fine.
The actual diagnosis
Simple, severe thirst. Peace lilies droop dramatically the moment they run dry - it is the most reversible crisis in houseplants, provided it has not been repeated so often the roots give up.
The rescue, step by step
- Checked the soil first to confirm dry - the same faint from soggy soil would have meant the opposite problem and the opposite treatment.
- Watered thoroughly from the top until it ran from the holes, then once more ten minutes later.
- Left it alone in bright, indirect light. No feed, no repot, no fuss.
Timeline
Where it ended up
Complete recovery. The two sacrificed leaves were the entire cost of a collapse that looked terminal.
The lesson
Know which of your plants are drama queens. A peace lily's faint is information, not a death notice - but confirm dry soil before watering, because the soggy version of the same pose means rot, not thirst.
