๐ชถ The maidenhair cut back to nothing
A worked example: this case follows the usual course of the problem and is not a diary of one particular plant.
How it arrived
One missed weekend of watering - that is all a maidenhair needs. Every frond dried to brown lace, the whole plant apparently dead, en route to the bin when it was intercepted.
The wrong first guess
Trying to save the dead fronds by watering hard and hoping. Browned maidenhair fronds never green again; keeping them costs the plant energy and hides what is actually happening at soil level.
The actual diagnosis
Total top death with - crucially - a still-living root system underneath. The profile is explicit: with healthy roots, this fern will push a completely fresh flush if you dare to cut everything off.
The rescue, step by step
- Cut every single frond back to the base. What remained looked like a pot of soil - that is the treatment, done properly.
- Kept the soil consistently moist from then on: never soggy, never dry even for an afternoon.
- Parked the pot in the bathroom for standing humidity, in bright, indirect light.
- Waited without poking, on the roots' schedule rather than the owner's.
Timeline
Where it ended up
Complete regrowth from the roots. The plant that came back is entirely new above the soil line.
The lesson
For a maidenhair, the brave cut is the rescue. Dead fronds are spent - the plant lives in its roots, and constant moisture afterwards is the entire aftercare plan.
