Elaeagnus
The silverberry (Elaeagnus) is a tough, forgiving outdoor bonsai with leaves silvered beneath, tiny intensely fragrant autumn flowers and speckled berries - hardy, vigorous and very hard to kill.
This species needs to live outdoors with real seasons - including a cold winter rest. Kept indoors it declines and slowly dies. It is one of the commonest beginner mistakes, so give it the outdoor life it needs.
The silverberry is a quietly excellent bonsai: every leaf flashes metallic silver underneath, tiny bell flowers in autumn pour out a perfume far bigger than the tree, and speckled red berries follow. It is tough as boots, buds back from old wood, tolerates hard pruning and neglect, and asks only for sun and reasonable drainage. An underrated, forgiving outdoor tree with year-round interest.
