The dawn redwood is a living fossil and one of the easiest conifer bonsai - a fast, water-loving deciduous conifer with feathery foliage, russet autumn colour and a naturally perfect formal upright form.
This species needs to live outdoors with real seasons - including a cold winter rest. Kept indoors it declines and slowly dies. It is one of the commonest beginner mistakes, so give it the outdoor life it needs.
The dawn redwood was known only from fossils until living trees were found in China in the 1940s - and it turns out the living fossil makes a superb, easy bonsai. It is that rare thing, a deciduous conifer: soft feathery needles flush green in spring, turn russet in autumn and drop, revealing a fluted, buttressed trunk with a naturally perfect formal upright taper. It grows fast, loves water, forgives beginners and looks magnificent in groves.

Watering
Generous - like its cousin the bald cypress it loves water and is very hard to overwater in summer; many growers stand the pot in a shallow tray through heat. Drying out in leaf is the real danger. Reduce once bare in winter.
Pruning & shaping
Fast and cooperative: pinch and trim the soft growth through the season to build pads, and prune structure in the dormant season. It buds back readily, even on old wood - rare and welcome in a conifer.
Wiring
Young shoots wire easily; growth is so fast that wire bites within weeks in summer - check often. The natural taper means the trunk itself rarely needs wire.
Repotting & soil
Repot every 1-2 years in early spring - it fills a pot with roots remarkably fast - into a moisture-retentive but structured soil.
Feeding
Feed generously through the growing season to fuel its speed; ease off in late summer.
Winter & seasonal care
Fully hardy and needs winter dormancy; it drops all its needles after the russet autumn show - normal, it is deciduous. Shelter the pot from the hardest freezes.
Common problems & pests
Very few: drying out in summer is the main killer, and spider mites in hot dry spells. Rot is rare given its love of moisture. Vigour outgrowing the design is the usual 'problem'.

My conifer dropped all its needles - is it dead? No - the dawn redwood is deciduous; russet autumn colour and needle drop are normal.
How much water does it want? Lots - in summer heat a tray of water under the pot is welcome, unlike almost any other conifer.
