๐ŸŒณ An outdoor tree

This species needs to live outdoors with real seasons - including a cold winter rest. Kept indoors it declines and slowly dies. It is one of the commonest beginner mistakes, so give it the outdoor life it needs.

The Chinese juniper, and its popular 'Shimpaku' form, is one of the most celebrated bonsai species, prized for dense scale foliage, twisting trunks and dramatic deadwood. As with every juniper, the golden rule is outdoors, full sun, real seasons - kept inside it dies. For those who can give it the outdoor life, it is a superb, characterful tree.

Overview

A hardy evergreen conifer with soft scale foliage, exceptional for creating deadwood (jin and shari) and flowing, twisted forms. An outdoor tree that needs real seasons.

Light & position

Full sun outdoors, all year. Strong light keeps the foliage tight and healthy. Never keep it indoors long-term - the commonest way beginners lose junipers.

Watering

Water when the soil begins to dry, thoroughly, in free-draining soil. Avoid both drought and constant wetness. As with all junipers, an overwatered tree can stay deceptively green for weeks after the roots have failed.

Pruning & shaping

Pinch and trim foliage pads through the season, never stripping a branch completely bare, or it may die back. Build density gradually. Its deadwood features are a big part of styling.

Wiring

Wires beautifully and holds bold, flowing shapes - a big part of styling this species. Check regularly and remove wire before it bites into the bark.

Repotting & soil

Repot every 2-3 years in spring into free-draining conifer bonsai soil, trimming roots modestly - never bare-root a juniper hard.

Feeding

Feed through the growing season with a balanced bonsai feed to keep the foliage dense and green.

Winter & seasonal care

Needs a cold winter dormancy outdoors; shelter only the pot from the hardest freezes and drying winds. Do not bring it inside.

Common problems & pests

The indoor-death trap as with all junipers; also spider mites and juniper blight. Keep it outdoors, sunny and correctly watered and it is tough and long-lived.

FAQ

Is it different from a common juniper for care? No - all junipers want full sun outdoors, real seasons, and correct watering.

What is jin and shari? Deadwood features - a stripped branch (jin) and trunk (shari) - that junipers carry beautifully.

โš ๏ธ Bonsai tools and training wire are sharp - keep them away from children. Some bonsai species (and their sap, leaves or seeds) are toxic to pets if chewed; check before keeping one where animals reach. This is general growing guidance; specifics vary by climate and individual tree.
